The Ndebele Fertility Doll is made of a cylindrical body in wood wrapped in cotton cloth, the neck has a traditional rings in metal and a beaded collar, and the arms are made out of beads, too. Even dolls can be made of recycled materials as shown in the video (ACE for kids - making Ndebele dolls). *Where is it produced and by whom? The Ndebele Fertility Doll is produced in the Southern African. It is produced by the Ndebele, Zulu, and other African women. * What symbols or makings does it contain? Describe it in full detail. The Ndebele Fertility African dolls carries a symbol to their culture. The doll symbolize the tribe women's status or the important events that are happening in their lives. For example, the fertility doll gives good luck to the bride when she gets marry but after her third child the doll has to be destroyed or give away. * Could people of African descent live comfortably without it? Why or why not? How do you know? People from South Africa would not live comfortably without it because it has been for generations in their culture. The Ndebele Fertility Doll represent the women from African. I know that they wouldn't live comfortably because in my Country we have a similar tradition that when a girl turns fifteenth her parents throws a party (quinceanera) and the girl gets her last doll before she becomes a women. It shows how important it is in our culture but also the significance the doll has in being the last doll the girl receives. That is the reason why I know the Southern African people would not live comfortably without it because it represents who they are through the doll. |
